This £125 test can tell if you're at risk for Alzheimer's and more

A test to tell if you are at risk from Alzheimer's disease, cancer and dozens of other conditions has gone on sale in the UK today - for £125.

The test, which uses a saliva sample, can predict a number of things including which exercise is likely to suit the user best, and whether they are more likely than normal to suffer from Parkinson's.

The test is already available in the US and is being marketed online by 23andMe, a company that is part-funded by Google.

A customer spits into a tube, seals it and sends it back to the firm's labs for analysis. A detailed report will then be received four to six weeks later via post.

The company aims to help people take better care of their health by arming them with more than 100 pieces of genetic information.

Critics have said the science behind the analysis is not advanced enough and could lead to some people being falsely reassured or putting the NHS under added pressure.

Similar genetic tests are available in the country already but provide less information for more money.

The firm says it has spoken to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency to ensure its test complies with UK regulations.
