Good mental health is very important when a person has been detected with prostate cancer. Dr. Jim Hu is of the opinion that depressed men with prostate cancer should join support groups to urge them on to pursue the recommend treatments. Dr. Hu led the study that has been published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology where he feels that people with prostate cancer can be affected when their mental health suffers.
The study conducted on white versus black indicates that older men with more medical problems and lower income suffered from depression ad were not inclined to seek definitive therapy. This could be the case for less survival rates and more suicidal tendencies.
Though early studies indicate a connection between prostate cancer and vasectomies, experts on the subject do not agree that there is any association between the two. The Journal of Clinical Oncology published their findings after reviewing data on nearly 50,000 men who were in the age group of 40 to 75. They found 6,023 cases of men with prostate cancer from a total of 12,321 who had undergone vasectomy. While there was a possibility of developing lethal prostate cancer, there was no clear-cut indication that vasectomy was the cause of these types of low-grade or lethal prostate cancers.
Lorelie A. Mucci is the lead author and an associate professor of epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health. She claims: 'We're really seeing the association only for advanced state and lethal cancers.'
Dr. Behfar Ehdaie at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York agrees that further studies should be made to find out if men with higher risks of disease did not respond well due to their poor mental condition. He said 'As healthcare providers we need to be aware of the greater risk for aggressive prostate cancer in depressed men.'
