Consumption Of Broiled Of Baked Fish Once A Week Leads To Improved ...

As per a new study, it has been revealed that if a broiled or baked fish is consumed on a weekly basis, then it is extremely good for the brain as it helps in boosting cognition and memory.

As per a study by the researchers at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, the anti-oxidant effect of omega-3 fatty acids, that are found in good amounts in certain oils, nuts, seeds and fish also have an association with improved health, particularly with the health of brain. Alzheimer's disease can be caused owing to changes in lifestyle such as reduced rates of physical inactivity, obesity and smoking. Due to this, cognitive impairment can also be caused in the elderly.

James T. Becker stated that as per this study, people eating a diet of broiled or baked fish and not fried ones are known to have larger volumes of brain in regions that have an association with cognition and memory. However, they failed to find a relationship between these changes in the brain and levels of Omega-3. They made a conclusion that they were tapping into some general lifestyle factors through which the brain health is affected and that diet is just 1 part of it.

As per the study, it was found that people who consumed broiled or baked fish at least one time a week had greater grey matter brain volumes in the brain areas that are responsible for cognition (14 percent) and memory (4.3 percent) and have a likelihood of having a college education as compared to those who didn't consume fish on a regular basis. However, no association could be found between the blood levels of omega-3s and brain differences.

This study was published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine online.
