Melissa Carleton and her husband, Brian Lande, had little to cheer about past week until Melissa delivered a baby by C-section. However the only dark line in an otherwise perfect picture is that Melissa had gone into a coma.
Melissa has been in a coma since March but was able to carry her baby till full term. Melissa was earlier diagnosed with benign brain tumor and was advised to go for an operation. She however decided to postpone the operation till the birth of her child.
Fox 2 St. Louis reports that the delay in the operation led to the deterioration of her condition and she started to suffer from severe headaches and had difficulty in walking. Her condition worsened and she had a seizure and had to undergo emergency surgery.
The surgery had its fallout and now Melissa is said to have brain damage in a region which controls wakefulness. However Doctors opine that Melissa is aware of the happenings around her. She has squeezed family member's hands, and even put hubby Brian's hand on her tummy where the baby was kicking.
There have been incidences in the past where women in a far less state of consciousness have been able to give birth to healthy babies. In 2013 a 32 year old woman gave birth to a baby 92 days after she was declared brain dead by the doctors. The Hungarian woman had suffered a stroke and the Doctors were able to save the baby but could not save her. There are however no studies on the effects of such gestation on the child.
