Heartburn Medicine Can Cause Vitamin B

Taking Antacid medication for long term could lead to deficiency of vitamin B-12, as per latest research published in JAMA December edition. The condition could become worse if left untreated and raises the risk of dementia. Taking proton pump inhibitors could increase vitamin B-12 deficiency by 65 percent.

Lack of vitamin B-12 can increase risk of nerve damage, dementia and anemia. The symptoms of deficiency include fatigue, change in skin color and shortness of breath. However, a simple blood test can be used to determine the deficiency of vitamin B-12.

The study pointed out at taking proton pump inhibitors (PPI) or histamine 2 receptor antagonist over a period of two years or more could places patients on high risk of vitamin B-12 deficiency. The research team has suggested patients taking acid-suppressants to discuss the issue with their doctor. Also, the individuals suffering from heartburn should not immediately stop their current medication. They should consult their doctor and ask for alternative in cases of long term use of antacid.

Proton pump inhibitors account for more than $14 billion in yearly sales across United States. Proton pump inhibitors shut down the cells in stomach which produce acid. These are different than chewable antacids which work after the acid has formed in the stomach. Their impact on vitamin B-12 is different. PPI are mainly sold under brand names Nexium, Prilosec and Prevacid. Nexium is marketed and produced by AstraZeneca. The company states that long term use could lead to weakening of bones in patients. Prilosec has Omeprazole as main constituent and is sold as over-the-counter medicine in United States.
